YOU,
too, can
Create A SUpER PaRTy!
By Diana Crow
When
I picked up my sixth grade son after the Halloween party
at the middle school he and his friends were upset and disappointed.
They were bored because the only option was to dance in
the gym. (Costumes, or not, they werent yet ready
to dance at a party with the more sophisticated eighth graders!)
Does this sound familiar?
That day I determined to get involved at the middle school
to plan suitable parties.Im glad I did! I hope youll
be inspired by my story to create safe social events for
youth in your community.
What did I do? I contacted other schools to learn
about their social events, then presented a plan to our
Principal and Parent-Teacher Organization. They encouraged
me to implement it.
I didnt know many people, since we were newcomers,
so I asked the PTO officers for their friends names.
When I called To Invite these parents to help with the project,
I asked for their friends names.
The response was gratifying. Fifty parents enthusiatically
ran game booths, served refreshments, and roamed as monitors.
Half the student body, about 350 students, enjoyed the first
party. Student attendance increased as we produced more
parties. Teachers and administrators were pleased with our
efforts. Schools continue to use this effective party plan.
